New Resource: Teaching the Concepts of Sustainable Building to All Students
A new joint publication between Second Nature and the U.S. Green Building Council was recently released that readers of our campus sustainability perspectives blog may be interested in. The publication, “Advancing Education for Sustainability: Teaching the Concepts of Sustainable Building to All Students” is intended to “explore the critical role of the built environment in educating all students about sustainability”. To that end, the document “provides a set of core sustainable building concepts, examples of institutions that are successfully teaching their students about sustainability, and recommends steps that higher education institutions could take to provide all students with the knowledge and skills to create a just and sustainable future”.
The publication comes at an important time. As Margo pointed out in her recent article, "A Look at the Growing Trend of Green Building in Higher Education" the interest in sustainable design and architecture continues to grow on college and university campuses. As this embrace of green building continues, students must be offered the opportunity to learn about sustainable buildings and design. Regardless of the discipline being studied, an understanding of sustainable building concepts can help solve a variety of complex problems and ensure that the students of today are prepared to meet the sustainability challenges they will be facing after they graduate.
Has your campus involved students in green building projects on campus? Do you know if your campus is offering any sustainable architecture/design courses open to students in any discipline? What are your thoughts on educating all students (regardless of major) on concepts of sustainable building?

Unity College in Unity Maine
At Unity College we provide a background in Sustainability to all of our students. While we don’t necessarily teach about building science specifically, we talk about sustainability as a whole, what defines it, what is a part of it, etc. Environmental Sustainability is a required course for every student to take during their third year at Unity. At this point in each student’s academic process, they should have an understanding of ecological principles that they can apply to human society in this class. Students develop critical analysis and quantitative reasoning to solve and analyze problems within sustainable issues.
Not only do we require every student to take Environmental Sustainability, we also offer two Bachelor of Science programs in sustainability. Our Agriculture, Food and Sustainability program focuses on farms and the community. These students are interested in where their food comes from and incorporating more local food into any setting. They play an active role in furthering future agricultural practices including changing current government and policies. We also offer Sustainable Design and Technology, a major I am a part of, which focuses specifically on building science related to global climate change. These students are both conceptually and technically inclined individuals who see the need for renewable technologies and energy efficiency. They explore multiple options for making every community a greener, more energy efficient place to live.
These are only some aspects in which Unity College focuses their students around the idea of sustainability. We provide our students with hands on learning; we put them in real-world scenarios, and ask them to solve the problems. If a student is interested in building wind turbines, installing solar panels, designing a garden, or simply debating the issue of climate change, Unity College is the right place to be!
