Her work focuses on creating opportunities for learning and engagement that help individuals develop the skills and perspectives needed to contribute to a more just and sustainable future.

As part of the 2026 AASHE Fellows recognition, Jean reflects on the transformative power of education, the importance of collaboration in advancing sustainability, and the lasting impact of working with students.

What motivates you to work towards the advancement of sustainability in higher education?

I’m motivated by many factors, but especially the opportunity to educate and equip students, colleagues and community members with skills and resources to tackle complex sustainability challenges. It is both a privilege and responsibility to be a catalyst for positive change, as I believe that every person has the power to help shape a more just and livable future.

In what ways do you believe higher education sustainability professionals can meet this moment in history?

I recognize that there are many diverse challenges in this moment in history. I believe deeply, though, in the power of education to transform individuals, organizations and society. Through the design of programs, systems and processes, I see opportunities to spark positive change, in areas like curriculum, research and operations. I understand that in organizations as complex as universities, the tools of clear communication, well-structured plans, systems-thinking and collaboration are crucial for progress, accountability and engagement.

What professional achievement or accomplishment are you most proud of?

I am especially proud of my work with students. I hope that, years from now, the alumni of my co-curricular programs and courses will still be engaged in meaningful sustainability work and will reflect back on their time as sustainability scholars at Franklin as foundational to their lives of purpose and impact.
