Campuses Turn out Lights for Earth Hour 2010
Hundreds of colleges and universities participated in Earth Hour again this year. (Just Google "College University Earth Hour" to see that the list goes on and on!) Campuses, like many others around the globe, participated in the World Wildlife Fund's event by turning out all of their lights on March 27, 2010 for one hour. I'd like to focus on a few campuses that I found unique:
The University of Notre Dame (IN) sponsored a campus wide Glow in in the Dark Utlimate Frisbee game on campus. Free glow bands were distributed. The University of Alabama also offered glow in the dark frisbee, as well as glow in the dark painting and music by a local band.
The University of Alberta, Grant MacEwan University, Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, and NorQuest College created the One Hour. No Power. Multi-Campus Challenge. The institution with the most student, faculty and staff Earth Hour pledges (per capita) will win bragging rights for a year!
Clemson University (SC) gathered on Bowman field to form the number 60 while holding candles. The lights in and around the field, of course, were switched off for the event.
Michigan State University published a press release that noted that during the institution's 2009 Earth Hour participation, MSU experienced a 1.5 megawatt decrease in campus energy use compared to the hours immediately before and after the event.
I'd also like to share two videos that Lehman College (NY) released after Earth Hour 2009:
