Facilitating Green Building at Under-resourced Colleges and Universities Through Technical Assistance Grants for Local Consultants

by Ilana Schoenfeld, Program Associate for Strategic Initiatives, Second Nature

Many under-resourced colleges and universities rely heavily on their local and regional building contractors, including architects and engineers, to provide the technical expertise necessary to carry out green building projects. Institutions located in remote areas, or in regions where green buildings are few and far between, are often subject to higher premiums charged for these project by contractors with little training or experience in green building.

Second Nature, with funding from The Kresge Foundation, is inviting colleges and universities that have received Title III/V designation from the Department of Education and that are in states with relatively low numbers of green building projects (MO, SC, TN, UT, AR, KY, KS, ID, NE, LA, MS, WV, OK, WY, ND, SD, AL, IN, MT, NM) to apply for green building technical assistance grants of up to $2000 each.

Are you able to use the Report Card to advance sustainability on your campus? What do you like about it and what do you dislike about it? Are there things that you'd like to see changed?

How can we ensure access to higher education in troubling economic times?

A recent New York Times article caught my attention, "Colleges Accepting More Students Who Can Pay Full Fare" which discusses the struggles and decisions that admissions offices must make during trying economic times when determining who they accept into their programs.

How to make college tuition sustainable?

Unless you are in the small minority of students who are not faced with student loans, rising tuition rates are cause for alarm, especially at a time when the general state of the economy is not shining so bright. According to the National Postsecondary Student Aid Study (NPSAS) two-thirds (65.7%) of 4-year undergraduate students graduate with debt with the average student loan debt for seniors being $19,237. Graduate and professional students generate even more debt, ranging from $27,000 to $114,000. When I was at U of K, tuition rose 12% in one year (as I was browsing the news last week I saw that it would be going up another 9% for 2008-2009). At the same time, the student loan scandals that rocked the higher ed community last year, reveals just how eager some banks, lenders and even some college financial offices are to sign students up for more loans.

MLK Jr. Day and Sustainability on Campus

Having this past Monday off in celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, (one of only four federal holidays here in the US that celebrate an individuals life) got me thinking of the importance of this holiday for everyone living here in the US, and to all those working towards a just and sustainable society.
