Campus Bicycle Plans

Nothing makes your day start poorly like being honked and yelled at by angry drivers who don’t understand what you’re doing on a bicycle on their road, making them drive a little more slowly and cautiously - or sometimes not. My wife was recently hit by a car while on her bicycle. Luckily she wasn’t injured and the driver was extremely kind about the whole thing.

Ridesharing on Campus

In an effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, campus congestion, and become more sustainable many campuses look to transportation solutions. Many campuses have successfully implemented car share programs and bike share programs to tackle transportation related issues.

Guidance on Scope 3 Emissions, pt 1: Commuting

During the first round of greenhouse gas (GHG) reporting for the ACUPCC, we heard from quite a few signatories who were struggling to calculate their emissions from commuting and air travel. These sources are responsible for a significant portion of many institutions' total emissions but they are also among the most difficult emissions sources on which to gather reliable data. The following guidance is intended to help campuses track and ultimately reduce emissions related to commuting and air travel.

Guidance on Scope 3 Emissions, pt 2: Air Travel

Part 1 of this post focused on estimating emissions from commuting. This post focuses on emissions from air travel.

In order to calculate emissions from air travel, you will need to determine the total number of passenger air miles paid for by or through your institution.  The challenge is that institutions generally don't track this data in one place (if at all) so you may have to pull together data from several entities, including the business office, study abroad office, athletics department, and your institution's travel agent(s).

Carpool Application on Facebook

Going somewhere this holiday season? Have a few empty seats in the car? Here's my suggestion: offer a ride using the Carpool application on Facebook. The Carpool application on Facebook is a ride-share program that allows you to view profiles of riders and drivers before you decide to carpool with them. It helps to alleviate the apprehension of spending four hours in a car with someone you've never met.
