Webinar: Mapping the (mis)alignment of HEIs with sustainability

March 17, 2021 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm EDT

Free

This event is part of the AASHE Award Winner Webinar Series, featuring a presentation of the Campus Sustainability Research Award winning project.

Science, technology, and innovation have been recognized as one of the main drivers for shifting to a sustainable path. The introduction of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in 2000 and the recent Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015 heralded a new era. At this point, higher education institutions (HEIs) have a central role to play. Consequently, an increasing number of these institutions have recognized their responsibility and are incorporating sustainability into their structures, operations, and practices, following a holistic approach. However, its (holistic) contribution to sustainability and sustainable goals remains a complex and unresolved debate. Therefore, the aim of this study is twofold: a) It aims to investigate the patterns of sustainability research as well as the implementation of sustainability practices; b) to analyze the (mis)alignment of research in HEIS towards sustainable goals, as well as to analyze the interlinkage among the 17 goals.

In this regard, a new delineation procedure of how sustainability and sustainable goals can be delineated from a bibliometric approach will be presented. In addition, a holistic perspective of how Spanish Public and Private Universities (SUE) are integrating sustainability into their systems by considering different dimensions (Research; Internationalization, University Governance, Assessment and Reporting, and Campus Operations) will be further explored.
