This post is related to the American College & University Presidents' Climate Commitment (ACUPCC).

As a college dedicated to providing an accurate representation of GHG emissions, I am looking to find a computer program or at least a more precise way to measure emissions as a result of air travel.  Does anyone know of any colleges that are accounting for these emissions in both an efficient and exact way?

Thanks.

Daniel,

I suggest using the free GHG Protocol calculation tools. They offer a variety of ghg inventory templates for all major emissions sources, in the form of excel spreadsheets. All legitimate greenhouse gas accounting protocols are based on the GHG protocol, including the ACUPCC's, so these tools are a safe bet to use for your campus carbon inventory. You need to use the "Other Indirect Emissions" spreadsheet [.xls]. The directions are included in the excel file, and they are fairly straightforward. Refer to the Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standards for guidance or clarification on using these spreadsheets.

Good luck!

Daniel,

We previously had no method of capturing this data other than going through the files by hand.  We were able to get cabinet level support and the support of all four travel offices on campus to get the travelers to report their emissions in order to recieve reimbursement.  Because the onus is on the traveler, we chose a simple website to reccommend.
