Location Inn at the Park, Balboa Park, San Diego Zoo, Mission Bay Aquatic Center
Date June 4-6, 2012

Registration Closed

Registration Deadline May 15, 2012

This three-day workshop, to be held this summer in San Diego, CA, allows academic faculty to explore how they can meaningfully integrate sustainability, which is broadly defined, into their classrooms. The workshop will be comprised of faculty (participant) discussion groups, resource experts, case studies, examples of best practice, and a particular focus on the importance of student learning for sustainability. Included in the cost of the workshop are presentations on sustainable agriculture, sustainable communities, and biomimicry; a visit to the San Diego Zoo; a presentation on sustainability initiatives at historic Balboa Park; a Kumeyaay exhibit and presentation at the San Diego Museum of Man; and an optional excursion to the Mission Bay Aquatic Center, with a tour and canoeing or kayaking afterwards.

The premise of the workshop is that the workshop participants are the experts when it comes to deciding what and how much to integrate into an existing course. Participants will have the opportunity to develop such strategies with other faculty from a range of disciplines (from social sciences, natural sciences, arts and humanities) about different ways to think about and teach about sustainability. More importantly, participants will have opportunities to extend research and teaching horizons across disciplines and create new networks with colleagues from across the country.
