In May, AASHE joined a coalition of organizations in signing a letter led by Lawyers for Good Government opposing provisions in the FY25 House Budget Reconciliation Bill that would eliminate critical clean energy tax credits and environmental grant programs. The proposed changes would increase energy costs, reduce job opportunities, and jeopardize community-led efforts to advance sustainability and climate resilience.

The letter urges Congress to protect tax credits such as the Clean Electricity Production Tax Credit (45Y), Investment Tax Credit (48), and credits for clean vehicles and EV infrastructure, which have catalyzed thousands of projects and job creation across the country. It also calls for the preservation of EPA grant programs established under the Inflation Reduction Act, which are currently supporting local governments, schools, and nonprofit institutions in improving air and water quality, increasing energy efficiency, and building climate resilience. AASHE supports this advocacy to ensure that higher education institutions and their communities continue to benefit from federal policies that promote equitable and sustainable development.
