Do you know how many events occur on your campus every year? Can you guess how many of those events use disposables? Do you have a hard time engaging your campus about proper recycling practices? At Johns Hopkins University, the Homewood Recycling Department realized that event waste was a large portion of the campus incinerator waste stream. To combat this challenge, they developed a Zero Waste Events Program which streamlines the process of hosting zero waste events on campus. The program consists of the Homewood Zero Waste Events Planning Guide and in-person trainings to teach people how to be better zero waste event hosts and recyclers. During the 2017-2018 academic year Homewood Recycling saw its highest number of Zero Waste Events, roughly 64% of total campus events. This has a direct correlation to their campus recycling rate which also has increased from 26% (2013) to 45.4% (2018). Brigid Gregory Trites, Johns Hopkins University, Recycling Coordinator Brigid Gregory Trites is the Recycling Coordinator at Johns Hopkins University’s Homewood Campus. She manages several waste focused initiatives including the JHU Preferred Green Caterer List, campus zero waste events, student and staff focused outreach, the JHU Free Food Alert, and the Hop Reuse Hub. Brigid has over 6 years of experience in campus sustainability and holds a Bachelors’ of Science from The Pennsylvania State University and a sustainability focused MBA from University of Delaware.
