Webinar: Learned Lessons and Tips for GRITS and Green Revolving Funds

In this session, you will hear from a wide variety of users of Green Revolving Funds and the GRITS tool sharing both best practices and learned lessons. We will also ask you to share your questions, suggestions, and learn lessons. We will cover:
(1) Strategies to create and manage a Green Revolving Fund and its governance
(2) Criteria for projects and how to use GRITS for tracking and reporting
(3) Share outcomes from GRF and GRITS, both successes and learned lessons
(4) Ways to elevate renewable energy, energy efficiency and sustainability projects using GRF and GRITS.

Our panel consists of GRITS’s founder, a manager of a newly formed GRF, and seasoned GRITS users, and managers who have had success as well as roadblocks with the GRF committee and using GRITS effectively. This session is for anyone feeling stuck with its GRF or GRITS, as well as anyone considering starting a GRF or using GRITS.

Mark Orlowski, Founder & Executive Director, Sustainable Endowments Institute

Mark is the Founder and Executive Director of the Boston-based Sustainable Endowments Institute. He has worked in the campus sustainability field for two decades and has led a range of programs including SEI’s College Sustainability Report Card (2007-2011), Billion Dollar Green Challenge (2011-present) and GRITS web platform (2014-present). Back in the day, when you could travel and attend conferences/events in person, he was invited to speak at more than 125 colleges in over 30 states across the US and internationally. He’s a graduate of Berkshire Community College, Williams College and Harvard University. He’s also an Environmental Leadership Program (ELP) Senior Fellow and an Edmund Hillary Fellow.

Sophie Rogers, Manager of Sustainability, Bentley University

Sophie joined Bentley University’s Office of Sustainability in the summer of 2020, having graduated from Bentley with a Bachelor of Science in Marketing and Liberal Studies in Earth, Environment and Global Sustainability. Given her experience as a Student Sustainability Leader and valued team member, she completed the team by becoming the office’s Manager of Sustainability. Sophie brings extensive knowledge of the Office of Sustainability’s daily operations, mission, and strategic plan, relationships built with stakeholders across campus and a genuine passion for Bentley’s sustainability initiatives. Sophie is a proven contributor, having managed the process for evaluating financial opportunities for solar renewable energy certificate (SREC) sales from the university’s first onsite solar array, as a student intern. She also assembled and currently chairs the university’s first Green Revolving Fund Committee.

Christina Erickson, Director for Service & Sustainability Learning, Champlain College

Christina Erickson is the Director for Service & Sustainability Learning at Champlain College in Burlington, Vermont, where she works on integrating sustainability concepts and practices into the institution, operations, academics and culture of the campus. She connects campus and community based opportunities as service-learning projects in academic courses and manages the student Eco-Rep program, a peer-to-peer sustainability outreach program that focuses on residential student behavior. Christina has a PhD in Natural Resources with a focus in Sustainability Education, from the University of Vermont, a M.S. from the Audubon Expedition Institute at Lesley University’s Ecological Teaching & Learning Program, which focuses on place-based, ecological education and has a B.A. in Environmental Studies and Sociology from St. Lawrence University.

Jeremy King, Director of Sustainability & Campus Improvement, Denison University

Jeremy King is the Director of Sustainability & Campus Improvement at Denison University located in Granville, Ohio. He is an alumna of Denison graduating in 1997 with a degree in Biology and Education. In addition to his work at Denison, he serves on the boards of the Licking Land Trust and the Newark Canal Market District and Enterprise Hub. He is also the Co-Chair of the Licking County Local Food Council and Co-Founder of the Licking County Solar Cooperative. Jeremy is a returned Peace Corps Volunteer having worked on sustainable development and sustainable agriculture projects in the Ecuadorian Amazon from 2007 to 2009. Jeremy taught high school science at Circleville High School in Circleville, Ohio for ten years and during that time earned a Master of Science degree in Natural Resources from The Ohio State University.

Lisa Bjerke, Director of Change Management, GreenerU

Lisa leads GreenerU’s change management team and collaborates across disciplines to help institutions mitigate climate change through the built environment, operations, community engagement, and strategic alignment between mission and opportunities for climate action. Lisa provides sustainability assessment, planning, and implementation, capacity building, inclusive project management to institutions.
