Webinar: Promoting Sustainable Menstruation On Campus and Beyond

March 9, 2022 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm EST

Free

Menstrual cups offer a sustainable solution to the environmental impact of tampons and pads and offer a solution for people who menstruate who, either because of location or economic insecurity, are unable to access these products. Unfortunately, the existence of reusable replacements for tampons or pads is still not widely known. Join this webinar to learn how students and faculty at Dallas College Cedar Valley Campus teamed up to educate the campus community about sustainable menstruation and expand access to menstrual cups as part of a celebration of International Women’s Day (March 8th).

This interactive webinar will begin with the stories of people who have experienced living without menstrual products and the impact on their lives. The audience will be immersed in a point/counterpoint discussion between panel members on organizing a program on sustainable menstruation that includes distribution of free menstrual cups to interested individuals. Participants will be provided with guidance and support to bring similar programs to their campus.

Betsy Drach

Betsy Drach, Founder and CEO, Dot Cup

Betsy, a Chicago-based marketer and Mama of two, tried and fell in love with menstrual cups after using one she purchased. However, her first cup turned brown over the course of the first year, it was hard to clean and the branding didn’t speak to her. She was also overwhelmed by the multiple sizes on the market, and wondered if, since the vagina is a flexible muscle, one size might work for most people? After traveling to rural Kenya and Cambodia, she also wondered if menstrual cups might be a solution for period poverty. These questions eventually led her to take the plunge, quit her job, and launch Dot Cup.

Skyla Webber, senior, Cedar Hill Collegiate High School

Skyla is president of Cedar Valley’s Green Club. Under her leadership the Green Club has reenergized the Cedar Valley Butterfly and Edibles Garden, established partnerships with various community members to conduct research using microorganisms to revitalize soil, and spearheaded volunteering to build garden beds at the Urban County Farm. She has been accepted and will be pursuing a degree in Sustainability Studies at UT Austin this fall. Her ultimate objective is to work for the United Nations as an environmental lawyer.
