A Green Future for Education: A detailed examination into what green schools are, the potential benefits, and the effect these schools have on local communities
It should come as no surprise in this age of enlightenment that the next push towards clean living is in the area of environmental themed schools. Only this time it isn’t just in the form of information, but in the literal building itself. Green schools. These schools hope to accomplish more environmentally friendly practices, through innovative design saving energy and resources. We live in a time when schools are quite literally practicing what they preach. The benefits that the schools hope to achieve have broader implications than just the environment. These green schools are aiming at creating a more healthy and productive learning environment, improved teacher retention, hands on learning, and of course the bottom line, financial savings. The teaching in these schools doesn’t just come from the teachers, but from the building itself. This paper will be structured into three parts; firstly an introduction into what characterizes a green school, followed by an in depth look at communities around the United States and globally that are effecting and being affected by these schools, and finally an analytical critique of the benefit of green schools.
