Education and Research:

The University of Kentucky demonstrates its commitment to sustainability education and research in its 2009-2014 Strategic Plan with the goal of being an “exemplar in the application of sustainability principles and practices and establish an institutional culture of sustainability". Its presidentially approved sustainability policy statement also builds its framework around the “cardinal principle” of becoming a model “sustainable campus.”

To advance these objectives in the areas of education and research, UK is presently: laying the foundations for an interdisciplinary sustainability undergraduate major; hosting an undergraduate sustainability living-learning community; populating its curriculum with over 60 courses and 10 programs (six undergraduate and four graduate) on sustainability in the colleges of Agriculture, Design, Arts & Sciences,
Engineering, Business and Economics, and even Fine Arts; fostering co-curricular activities and national media attention through its sustainability and organic farming research and CSA program at South Farm; incorporating sustainability into the citizenship and global dynamics components of its newly designed and approved general education program; undertaking individual and interdisciplinary research on topics as diverse as “green corrections,” agroecotourism, sustainable marketing and manufacturing, sustainable villages and city-regions, and solar buildings in places as close as Woodford County or as distant as Indonesia and China; researching light-rail transportation alternatives for Lexington; committing all future building construction on campus to LEED certification and energy saving performance contracting.

To offer some highlights, the solar vehicle designed and built by the Engineering College solar car team was awarded second place in the 2009 Formula Sun Grand Prix national college competition. Illustrative of its work in faculty and staff development are the incipient sustainability scholarly learning community, janitorial training and application of green cleaning products and techniques in all campus buildings and many of the Medical Center buildings. One of only 20 universities worldwide chosen to compete in the United States Department of Energy's 2009 Solar Decathlon, UK’s s.ky blue team is designing, constructing, and operating a solar-powered home as part of a solar village competition on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., in October 2009.

A recently passed student “green fee” is funding an annual Sustainability Lecture Series coordinated by a Student Sustainability Council, which will draw noted and pioneering sustainability visionaries and practitioners from around the world. Co-curricular activities are also promoted by the annual Big Blue Goes Green sustainability showcase held each September and the April Earth Month program that hosts over three dozen educational, community service, and entertainment promoting responsible global citizenship and culminating in Earth Day.

Campus Operations:

UK has taken a very strong leadership role in integrating the principles of sustainability with our campus operations. UK has operated a sophisticated, 24 hour/7 day-manned centralized energy management control center (Delta Room) since 1985. This facility monitors and controls the majority of HVAC and other equipment on campus, e.g. , night reduction in use and other off peak activities. This central control has lowered campus energy use and is estimated to save $1.5 to $2.0 million annually. We began replacing T-12 lamps with T-8s more than 15 years ago.

We have also initiated popular energy conversation campaigns. In the fall of 2008 the university placed 10,000 small “Flip the Switch” stickers above light switches in all of our residence hall rooms. We are also improving a real-time energy consumption interface for some of our campus buildings.

Our Dining Services unit has earned national attention for our aggressive commitment to purchasing locally produced food. In 2008-2009 UK fell just short of our goal of $500,000 invested in local farms. Two years ago, all of our dining facilities eliminated the use of trays in serving lines to reduce food waste as well as water and chemical usage. We compost our pre-consumer food waste and recycle everything possible from the kitchens. We have also switched to reusable plates and flatware in one of our largest facilities. In our other facilities we use bio-based compostable flatware and plates when appropriate.

We operate a nationally recognized bicycle library and on-campus bike repair shop. In July of 2008 the New York Times recognized the Wildcat Wheels Bicycle Library as one the seven most innovative campus sustainability initiatives in the country. This bicycle recycling program has more than 115 bikes available to any member of the campus community.

Our two campus recycling programs (managed by Physical Plant and Resident Life) divert more than 31 percent of campus waste from our landfills and provide recycling services at high profile special events like home football games and commencement. We have competed in Recyclemania since 2006.

UK has recently switched to a green cleaning policy with the following criteria:

  • Chemical use has now been reduced from 19 chemical products to four.
  • Micro fiber tools and rags have replaced paper products.
  • The use of disposable mops has been reduced by 80 percent.
  • UK no longer uses buckets, thus reducing water consumption.
  • Dust mops are now cleaned in house to save money.

UK Parking and Transportation Services is commitment to sustainable transportation solutions. We use innovative software (alternetways) to promote ride sharing and carpooling and to host campus commuter challenges. PTS operates a free campus shuttle system and is implementing a bicycle registration system to make cycling a more positive experience for everyone. They conducted a large scale bike use and behavior study to help guide future advocacy efforts. PTS also completed a survey of bike parking spaces to inform their effort to ensure there is adequate and secure bike parking at all campus facilities.

2009-2014 University Strategic Plan
Our most recent strategic plan includes the following statement as part of our goal of Developing the Human and Physical Resources of the University: “Of equal importance is the call to be an exemplar in the application of sustainability principles and practices and establish an institutional culture of sustainability.” http://www.uky.edu/Provost/strategic_planning/plan.htm

Sustainability Advisory Committee
Created in March 2008 and appointed by the President, this 12-member committee has the following charge:

  • Develop the university's Statement on Sustainability Policy and Principles
  • Set goals and plan actions designed to further advance an institutional culture of sustainability
  • Assess the completeness and progress of university sustainability efforts as compared to national benchmark institutions
  • Promote and encourage sustainable best practices in university facility planning, design and construction
  • Conduct an annual review of UK operations in terms of sustainability, develop indicators to measure progress, and make suggestions and recommendations for improvements
  • Prepare a guidance plan (including goals and action items) on how the university can achieve a reduction in campus greenhouse gas emissions and seek to become more climate neutral.

University of Kentucky Statement on Sustainability Policy
Adopted in late fall 2008, this statement calls for the University to participate in a continuous and on-going effort to institute the teaching, research, and practice of sustainability and to establish an institutional culture of sustainability. http://www.uky.edu/sustainability/efforts.html#4

Student Fee Implementation
The Board of Trustees agreed in March 2009 to support a mandatory student fee for 2009-2010 that includes an Environmental Stewardship Fee of 75 cents per semester and creates a means by which students can take an increasing role in the development and implementation of a sustainability policy at UK.

Public Engagement
Bluegrass Partnership for a Green Community is a joint effort of the University, the Lexington Fayette Urban County Government, Fayette County Schools and other groups to:

  • Sustain and preserve regional quality of life
