Education and Research:

In addition to all the “green” friendly programs developing campus-wide, UCO is primed to educate students, faculty and staff about the innovative programs and general environmental conservation. The campus offers more than 50 hours of environmental sustainability course work and participates in four energy and environmental conservation programs in the Edmond community.
UCO has worked with students and faculty on a campus nature trail and gardens planted to meet teaching needs (12 Oklahoma eco-systems represented with gardens).
List of additional items:

  • Required environmental courses in biology
  • Interdisciplinary Environmental Studies minor involving 4 colleges
  • Faculty Fulbright scholar in bio-diversity
  • Earth Day Edmond Arbor Day participation
  • Energy Conservation Awareness Week Environmental Research (Bio-diesel)
  • Big Event Program (Day of community service) Healthy Campus
  • Edmond Getting Green Festival participation
  • 2009 Oklahoma Sustainability Network Presenter / Exhibitor

The College of Math and Science and the College of Business have joined efforts in using Bio-Diesel as a medium for learning. The college of Math and Science and the department of Engineering and Physics have invested their time in studying the effects of Bio-Diesel on diesel engines and the environment in which they are used. The students are gaining value to the purpose of their education by taking advantage of the opportunities to apply the theories learned in the classroom into the real world.
To raise awareness about energy efficiency among students, the staff has developed creative ideas, such as door hangers for dorm rooms with energy-saving tips on one side and the football schedule on the other, and launching an environmental group for students. The Office of Facilities Management provides posters and flyers to show how the university is reducing its utility bills to make funds available for other campus enhancement purposes.

There are several student organizations provide for environmental causes:

  • Biology Club
  • Earth Day Committee
  • Hall Councils
  • IFC/Panhellenic Association
  • University of Central Oklahoma Outdoor Recreational Experience (UCORE)
  • Physics & Engineering Club
  • Student Programming Board
  • Wesley Foundation
  • Protecting Earth & Conserving the Environment Club (PEACE) - Inactive
Campus Operations:

Wind Energy. In April of 2006, UCO began to purchase electricity from 100% wind power. To date, UCO has saved over 50,000,000 kwh of electricity provided via wind.

TRANSPORTATION
Carpool incentives include providing students carpooling in high occupancy vehicles parking spaces closest to campus buildings while the “Bum-a-Bike” allows students to borrow bicycles for up to two weeks as a means of alternate transportation.

PURCHASING
By supporting Green Purchasing, the University realizes the positive impact it can make on the environment through purchasing decisions.
Best Green Purchasing Practices include the following:

  • Reduce Waste at the Point of Purchase
  • Consider Life Cycle Costs
  • Encourage Reuse of Items within the University’s Community
  • Energy and Efficiency - Require Energy Star Compliance

Performance Contracting.
Performance Contracting was recognized as the medium to resolve UCO’s energy problems. Since the implementation of Performance Contracting, more than $3.8M has been saved and we have reduced our CO2 emissions by 60,000,000 pounds.

The projects included not only the emergency repairs, but numerous retrofits of lighting, plumbing and HVAC controls systems which would increase creature comfort, while providing reduced energy consumption.

  • Average annual utility costs have been reduced from $1.56 per sq ft to $1.18 per sq ft or a reduction of 24%.
  • Improved controls for building HVAC temperature management
  • Low flow/waterless bathroom fixtures
  • Motion detector lighting controls
  • Replaced every single light ballast across campus for improved efficiency
  • Thermal energy storage tank
  • eBay sales of junk otherwise headed to a landfill or State surplus
  • Recycling programs across campus (paper, aluminum, refillable toner cartridges standardized, dry cell batteries, vehicle batteries, tires, scrap metal, plastics, cardboard, refrigerants, etc)
  • Energy efficient chillers and boilers
  • Generator to reduce electrical demand load
  • Energy misers on vending machines
  • Emergency LED exit lights use no electricity

Bio-Diesel.
In 2006, the employees of UCO Physical Plant saw an opportunity to use their abilities to promote change in the world of Bio-Diesel. A byproduct of the Bio-Diesel process is glycerin. The motor-pool uses the glycerin as degreaser and soap for the mechanics. Bio-Diesel is fuel produced for diesel engines from vegetable oil or animal fat. This change allowed UCO to embrace a more economical fuel source, a more environmentally friendly fuel substitute, and create a template for other interested parties to implement.

Landscape Management
Computer controlled irrigation system Mulching
Integrated pest management Disposal of litter
Wildlife Habitat (National Wildlife Federation) Display Gardens dedicated in 2007 with plans to
Use of green chemicals and fertilizers become botanical garden

ANNUAL EMISSIONS 62% reduction of CO2 emissions from 2004

Administration and Finance:

The Administrative Division is where the example for sustainability and environmental stewardship begins. The Administrative Division has to "be" the change they want to see in their university and only by being the example will others recognize their efforts. Through Administrative directives UCO has committed to the following sustainability objectives:

  • 100% Green Energy by means of wind
  • Gain status as one of the leading Environmental Protection Agency Green Power Partners
  • Development of “on sight bio-diesel” for all diesel vehicles
  • Focus on the operations of work weeks, LEAN processes and performance contracting
  • UCO Recycling Program
  • Create a safe environment that does not only focus on environmental sustainability, but also on human sustainability.

Business Partnerships
Performance Contract with Johnson Controls
Custodial - Standards for green chemicals and sanitary sewer dumping
Food Service - Eco-dishware, recycling, Food Bank, Fresh Garden
Book Store - Eco-clothing

Signed, completed first submission, working on comprehensive climate action plan for the American College & University President’s Climate Commitment.

The use of Lean University has resulted in significant savings to the university in terms of financial and human resources.

Coordinating “green”
In the last year, UCO has hired a full-time sustainability coordinator, charged with planning and executing campus-wide “green” activities for students, faculty and staff. The coordinator also assists in beefed up efforts to draw grant money, conferences and special events to the Edmond campus.
