Environmental Studies

Capitalizing on the unique and varied environmental settings in southern Oregon, the Environmental Studies program effectively prepares its students for success in a broad range of environmental careers. The ES curriculum provides students with the interdisciplinary academic knowledge and the practical experiences necessary for them to successfully address complex environmental issues, both regional and global.

The Environmental Studies Department has completed an exciting overhaul of the ES curriculum. The new curriculum has been approved and will be in place starting Fall 2009. ES Majors choose a concentration in Cultural Resource Management, Earth Sciences, Ecology and Conservation, Land Use Planning, or Sustainable Development.

Certificate in Sustainability Leadership Program

This certificate prepares students to understand the issues and challenges involved in creating a sustainable business, community, and ecosystem. Students who complete the certificate will have a strong grasp of what sustainability is, how it is achieved, and the forces that discourage sustainable systems. This understanding will enhance their ability to serve as effective leaders in public, private, and nonprofit organizations throughout the region and state.

Master of Science in Environmental Education

Environmental Education is a 1½ year master’s program. A hands-on program, it provides field-oriented courses that broaden students’ scientific understanding of the environment, exposes students to environmental problems and associated social conflicts, and prepares students to become effective environmental educators.

Southern Oregon University is uniquely situated to prepare the environmental educators of the future. The Biology Department includes a number of field-oriented biologists in various disciplines eager to work with developing environmental educators. SOU is committed to serving and supporting a variety of environmental programs including the Environmental Studies undergraduate program, programs at Deer Creek Center for Field Research and Education, and the Crater Lake Science and Learning Center.

Deer Creek Center for Field Research & Education

Southern Oregon University, in partnership with the Siskiyou Field Institute, is actively developing the Deer Creek Center for Field Research and Education (DCC). The 870 acre site is located adjacent to the Illinois River canyon, the Siskiyou Mountains and the Kalmiopsis Wilderness Area, one of the largest wilderness areas in the state of Oregon. DCC is surrounded on three sides by public land providing easy access to land far beyond the boundaries of the site. The site includes areas dominated by serpentine soils and the unique flora and fauna associated with them. Fens with carnivorous cobra lilies and a number of endemic plants are some of the most distinctive features.

Crater Lake Science & Learning Center

The Crater Lake Science and Learning Center recently opened just below the rim of Crater Lake. It is operated jointly by the National Park Service, the Oregon Institute of Technology and Southern Oregon University.

The facilities include recently refurbished historic buildings at the Headquarters. The program serves teachers and students from the region providing instruction and interpretation primarily in the summer and fall. The program works closely with Park interpreters. There are expanding opportunities for our graduate students to work in these programs.

Campus Operations:

Green Energy Fee

SOU is the first university in Oregon (and one of the first in the U.S.) to offset 100 percent of its energy consumption—both electricity and natural gas—with clean, renewable power. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recognized Southern Oregon University as its Individual Conference Champion for 2007–08 for purchasing more green power than any other school in the Cascade Collegiate Conference.

LEED Platinum Certification - RCC/SOU Higher Education Center

The Higher Education Center is a new three-story educational building that is jointly owned and operated by Southern Oregon University and Rogue Community College. As well as being an example of cooperation and collaboration between two institutions, the RCC/SOU Higher Education Center is a model of environmental stewardship. To that end, the project is projected to receive Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum, the highest level of certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

Green design features include use of regional and recycled content materials, FSC Certified wood from sustainably harvested local forests, on-site storm water detention and drought tolerant landscaping. Innovative strategies include heat wheel energy transfer to pre-heat ventilation air, evaporative cooling, over 50% reduction in water use.

Facilities

  • Energy-efficient lighting will be installed in 13 laboratories and classrooms in the Science Building in the summer of 2009.
  • Energy-efficient lighting has been installed in a lecture hall (Room 150) and a classroom (Room 195) in the Education/Psychology Building.
  • Facilities Management & Planning is implementing a Green Housekeeping Program.

  • SOU submitted a request to the Oregon Department of Energy for Federal Economic Stimulus funds for a 67.2 kW solar photovoltaic system on McNeal Hall.

Grounds

  • Eleven remaining manual irrigation systems on campus are being replaced with automatic irrigation systems to reduce water consumption.
  • Landscape Services is working toward reducing the amount of irrigation water that is delivered to the Ashland Campus by the Talent Irrigation District.
  • Landscape Services composts organic matter collected on the campus and uses a chipper to convert tree limbs to mulch for use on the campus landscape.

Administration and Finance:

American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment

In September 2007, President Mary Cullinan signed the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment, joining 284 other colleges and universities promising to address activities that will reduce our green house gas emissions.

Sustainability Council

Southern Oregon University is committed to sustainable practices, environmental stewardship, and research that advances our understanding of local, regional, and global environmental issues. To assist SOU in remaining at the forefront of sustainability and to better coordinate and chronicle the many environmental enhancement activities in our region and on campus, President Mary Cullinan established the SOU Sustainability Council in April of 2007.

From the President's memo establishing the Council:

"The Sustainability Council will be a University-wide group appointed to (1) advise me and the Executive Council in matters relating to sustainability and environmental impact; (2) promote environmental stewardship; (3) coordinate efforts of individuals and groups on campus; and (4) educate the campus community about sustainable practices.

The charge of the Council is to: Lead through example by promoting the incorporation of environmental concerns in University decisions

Promote conservation of natural resources to the best of our ability and the creation of sustainable practices and programs on campus

Educate our community about the necessity of sustainable environmental practices and ecologically friendly economics

Identify and support research areas and topics for faculty and students

Build relationships with local governments, businesses, and local citizens in order to promote environmentally sound practices within the region

Know and understand local, national and international programs to ensure that our environmental practices and policies adhere to or exceed the global vision for a sustainable future."

Finance and Administration

  • Finance and Administration has created a new position, Director of Campus Planning and Sustainability.
  • Student Affairs and Finance & Administration are working to create another new position, Sustainability Coordinator, and hope to have that position filled in September 2009.
