Courses Focusing on Campus Sustainability

This resource lists courses that focus on "campus sustainability" or how to make the institution more sustainable. Students in these courses conduct research on and implement projects that advance sustainability on campus or in the local community. Examples include researching green building options, helping collect data for STARS, and designing a campus bike share program. Each student undertakes an original project to improve the environment at Cornell while working with a faculty advisor and the Cornell infrastructure (generally campus life and/or facilities). Through class discussions, students learn how to be more effective at developing environmental programs in the future, both during and after college. Efficiency Through Engineering and Construction

This multi-disciplinary enterprise course works with the local and campus communities to implement efficient and sustainable design in new and existing construction projects. Two present campus projects are designing covered bike racks for installation at various campus locations, and designing a storage building for the rowing shells of the Michigan Tech Crew Club. Both projects use innovative efficient design and sustainable product selection and assembly.

Green Building Design addresses a wide variety of built environment issues, including environmental considerations, economic benefits such as reduced operating costs, enhanced occupant productivity, and increased building marketability. The class includes an evaluation of campus buildings and community sustainable buildings. Students will develop designs for MTU buildings utilizing LEED guidelines.

In the 21st century, sustainability is an imperative for business success, as well as a source of new opportunity. The intention of this seminar is to integrate the concepts of sustainability into a comprehensive business model that is based on the triple bottom line of social, environmental and financial performance, or People, Planet, and Profit. This seminar will examine the issues, challenges and concerns of providing Sustainability Leadership specific to the private sector, including maximizing efficiencies, making the business case, corporate social responsibility and reporting. Topics will include an in-depth review of policy and regulation, the effects of business practices on developing countries, social justice, human health, and climate change; as well as the positive impacts of business models that incorporate corporate social responsibility (CSR) practices. Participants will learn to align operational functioning with sustainability. They also will learn and practice stakeholder engagement and facilitation techniques to use in their own organization.

ENVS 3001: Sustainable Solutions Consulting: an on-campus service learning course.

Students gain experience in real world problem solving as they work with CU’s professional staff from Facilities Management, Housing and Dining Services, Environmental Center, and CU Recycling on top priority projects to move CU-Boulder towards greater realization of the University’s goals for sustainability. The seminar objective is to develop a foundational understanding of technical approaches and analytical frameworks that can be used to develop, execute, and monitor sustainability. Students will review the history of sustainability, cover core frameworks and principles. Students will learn about the process of promoting a culture of sustainability, encompassing change at the human, departmental, and organizational levels. Topics covered include: adaptive vs. transformative change, laying the foundation for change, relationship building, leadership for innovation, policy development, sustainable characteristics of organizations, recognizing disincentives, benchmarking, community-based social marketing, community partnerships, dealing with resistance and creating buy-in. Communication strategies covered in this seminar include how to design successful strategic communications among employees, clients, and the public. We will tap into the latest research from policymakers, think tanks, researchers and organizations who are on the forefront of messaging about sustainability, and we’ll examine what is working, what has not, and why. Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of how to frame sustainability, develop a communications plan, and implement the plan with confidence and leadership. Finally this seminar will also address best-practices for stakeholder engagement. Participants will learn facilitation tactics to identify shared mission, vision, and core values. We will also learn strategies to create a shared story that enables your organization to convey a shared identity and purpose around sustainability initiatives.

The Sustainability & the Campus course explores the ecological, social, and economic dimensions sustainability in higher education—using U-M as a "living laboratory" as part of the process.This interactive, interdisciplinary course draws upon theory and practice in sustainability, environmental management, organizational change, and social advocacy. Students conduct a substantial, hands-on group project in conjunction with a university sponsor. Through site visits, guest lectures, discussions, lectures and the group project, this course addresses real-life challenges of campus environmental sustainability. Students complete the course with an understanding of the campus as a lever for social/environmental change and with the personal tools to act as change agents. As part of the class, students present their findings and recommendations for how to improve sustainability efforts on the U-M Campus.

Summer Internships - Integrated Island Engineering Systems for Sustainability

Past course projects have focused on diverse issues related to campus sustainability in both operations and curriculum.  Each semester the course focuses on a new topic. The professor invite key decision makers into the class to 'charge' the class with conducting the work.  Students conduct comprehensive cost-benefit analyses resulting in a formal proposal authored by the class and submitted to these key decision makers on campus.  In 2007 the project addressed composting food and paper waste on campus.  In 2008 it is incorporating concepts of sustainability throughout the curriculum.

In this course, The University of Vermont is used as the primary case study to investigate its institutional practices related to sustainability and the associated roles of members of the campus community. The campus serves as a living laboratory for identifying, evaluating and assessing indicators of progress. Particular attention is given to empowering students with the knowledge, organizational skills, and confidence to develop their own capacities as change agents for fostering a greater institutional commitment to sustainability. Students apply their learning by developing assessment reports for programs on campus, working in service to UVM’s Office of Sustainability.

University of Washington, Seattle (WA)

Projects include design of a green building for the campus environmental center, the creation of the plan for an Ursinus organic garden project, the design and planning (ecological, economic, and business) for a constructed wetland as part of the college’s stormwater management system, a retrofit of the environmental residence hall into a zero-impact house, and the creation of a prototype and test plot for a green roof.

Students in the senior seminar work on a group project for the duration of the semester. This project has sometimes been an off-campus partnership with a local conservation group, and sometimes an on-campus sustainability project. Recent projects of the latter variety have included the writing of a sustainability master plan for the college and writing implementation plans for the college’s organic garden project and constructed wetland.

Among other projects, this course studies ecological footprints and has students analyze resource use on campus.  In 2006-07 students developed 12-15 minute presentations that they presented to various constituencies on campus (food service, purchasing, etc.)
