Kiwi Magazine Releases first Annual Green College Report

Kiwi Magazine just released their Green College Report highlighting 50 colleges and universities from the US and Canada they have identified as being committed to sustainability. Ranging in scope from small liberal arts colleges to large flagship state institutions, the Kiwi report provides a cross section of the increased emphasis sustainability is garnering in higher ed.  Designed for teens and their families, the report also highlights the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment (ACUPCC) and  includes the official commitment letter and the list of signatories as of August 2007. Although familiar with many of the institutions (almost all are AASHE members-woo hoo!) what I found most impressive was the quality and quantity of photographs interspersed throughout the report. Make sure you check out the full page photo on page 13- It's a great picture from the University of Vermont promoting the use of reusable mugs- the photo shows dozens of disposable cups hanging from a tree with a sign explaining the importance of waste reduction. Another reason I enjoyed this report was that, unlike some reports (*note this is a friendly jab back at our friends at Grist.org -see Gettin' Schooled for a little background) that have come out recently profiling institutions of higher learning Kiwi does not have a hierarchy in their report. The Kiwi article arranges the campuses in simple alphabetical order. This is important because of the diversity of campuses included- it is difficult if not impossible to accurately compare campuses that have huge differences in student populations, state vs. private, etc. Think your campus should have made the cut?
