This post is related to STARS, AASHE's Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System.

Hello,

I am an intern from UNC-Chapel Hill working on STARS credits.  I am currently trying to tackle OP Credit 9: Integrated Pest Managment, and am looking for some help from anyone who has completed this credit for their school.

UNC-CH practices pest management that fits the criteria set by the credit on all of its 824 acres.  However, a formal plan/policy does not exist for their current practices.  I am in the process of helping them develop such a policy so that UNC-CH can get STARS credit for the efforts that are already taking place.  Would anyone who has completed this credit for their school be willing to share the description of their IPM plan or policy?

Thank you,

Robert W.

Hey Robert,

Thanks for the post about STARS!  Although I am not affiliated with an institution, I can guide you to several IPM plans on different campuses.

As an AASHE member, UNC Chapel Hill has access to the AASHE Resource Center.  In the Resource Center under "Campus Operations" there is a link for "Grounds."  Here you will find a link to "Campus IPM Policies."

I hope this information helps you find what you are looking for and I look forward to responses from other campuses participating in STARS.

All the best--Jillian

I am also working on this credit from the Sustainability Office at Portland State University. I have gotten mixed messages on PSU's IPM. My main concern is that the IPM system of our contractors are only for "in/around buildings" and not landscaping. Does "in/around buildings" constitute a part of the grounds?

So far, this is what I have compiled for the credit:

"PSU doesn't have a written IPM plan or policy, probably because the pest management is contracted out. However, in the procurement process to obtain pest management services, PSU requires the use of an integrated pest management approach.

PSU contracts with two companies for pest management in/around buildings. "Pests that primarily feed on outdoor vegetation" are excluded from the contract, thus this info doesn't apply to landscaping."

Thanks for any input,

PJ Houser

Hi,

Based on the criteria in STARS OP Credit 9, whether or not "in and around buildings" can be considered grounds would be determined by how much area outside of buildings is serviced by the pest management contractor(s). At present this credit is focused on grounds and calculating to determine points earned requires figures for area of campus grounds. IPM indoors may be addressed in STARS OP Credit 3: Indoor Air Quality.

Please let us know if you have further questions.

Thanks,

Sue
