More so than for most other categories of GHG emissions, those associated with commuting and air travel tend to be based on assumptions. To make these assumptions, some raw data is needed but it tends to be indirect in nature. For guidance on data collection and calculations for these two categories of emissions, see "Guidance on Scope 3 Emissions: Commuting" and "Guidance on Scope 3 Emissions: Air Travel". Two example surveys (from Portland State University and Syracuse University) are included in the first article.

I'd also recommend our climate action planning how-to wiki, in particular the chapter on conducting a GHG inventory.

The survey is imbedded in the handbook which also discusses how to map the location of your commuters and do an on time assessment of mass transit.
