We're working with an institution that is looking to more accurately monitor their sustainability-related purchases so that these can be tracked year-over-year and reported. Like many, they currently use Banner and would like to find a way to track such purchases that can be accomplished with some sort of software add-on as opposed to a separate, manually developed tool such as an Excel spreadsheet. Does anyone have any experiences or knowledge of such software?

Thanks Sam, it does, much appreciated!
Glad to hear that. On further thought, I would like to add that it is quite helpful when institutions call up ERP vendors and ask them about the options they provide for tracking sustainability-related spend. The more they hear from institutions wanting ERP systems that provide that functionality, the sooner they will develop it.
The tricky part for the ERP vendor (and us) is determining what counts and doesn't count as sustainability-related spend. With regards to institutional procurement, the Green Products Roundtable (GPR) is right now doing terrific work to resolve the pain point. So if you want to get more involved in that work or if your ERP vendor asks you where to go for help on that front, look into joining the GPR effort. AASHE member American University and its Sustainability Officer, Chris O'Brien, are already participating in that effort. I'm sure GPR would welcome more higher ed participants as well as ERP vendors.

Hi Dave,
I don't know about Banner integration, but there are several firms that I know have recently been working with institutions of higher education to track and report on their sustainability-related purchasing. They are doing it in ways that aren't exactly what you are asking for, but that may be of interest:
Trucost recently collaborated with Michigan State University to assess the carbon footprint of MSU's whole supply chain.
Rosslyn Analytics has bundled Truscost's dataset into their procurement analytics software.
SciQuest, which has been NAEP's partner on their Annual Green Procurement Survey, now offers a Total Supplier Manager for higher education that they say includes sustainability metrics.
Hope that helps!
