Hi everyone,

I'm writing from NYU, where the administration is preparing to launch use of rat poison to control a growing rat problem. We're hoping to find better, safer alternatives that have been used in the past - particularly in urban campuses. Any input?

Thanks!

Most institutions in my area are using bait boxes (poison bait in a rat-size, one-entry box) for rat control vs. distributing poison. If this is not what you meant, then that option should be considered. Having made this observation, I'm not sure how well the boxes actually perform, although they seem safer for humans and wildlife.

One inescapable side effect of poisoning rats is that scavenging wildlife can ingest poisoned rat flesh. This is a major concern locally. Mostly it affects crows and dogs but we also have a resident bald eagle population that has to be considered.

I hope your institution considers first the sources of the problem and before investing in elaborate control methods, cleans up waste storage areas, composting areas, trash and food waste receptacles, etc.

cheers,
