We are planning a new law enforcement complex with an indoor firing range and wondering if there is such a thing as a LEED silver certified indoor firing range.  Particularly interested in institutions of higher education where this has been done and any Architecture firms who have done this type of design before.

Thanks for your question, Thomas.  I'm not an expert in green building, but it occurs to me that your best bet in finding an architecture firm with experience building a "green" law enforcement complex would be to look through the USGBC database of LEED certified projects.  I put "police" in the Project Name field of the search tool (everything else I left default) and it came back with two dozen LEED certified police headquarters, station and substation projects.  I don't know but maybe some of those facilities have indoor firing ranges.  The term "sheriff" turned up a couple results.  I tried other terms like "enforcement" without much luck.  The term "training" turned up the Reserve Training Center at Camp Lejeune military base, but there wasn't a detailed project profile.

Note: The USGBC database doesn't yet have projects from 2009 in it, so you may want to contact the USGBC to find out how you can learn about even more recent law enforcement green building projects.

Thomas;

Not sure if this helps, but check out the Washington State and Oregon Correction systems – both have LEED projects.  Also, the Seattle Justice center is the local police headquarters and is LEED Silver.  All the new police and fire stations in Seattle are required to be LEED Silver.

If you look at the LEED Certified list of projects on http://www.usgbc.org/LEED/Project/CertifiedProjectList.aspx you can filter on “police” and get all you want. There are probably many more than I have shown below.

City of Tacoma Police Headquarters Tacoma WA US Silver

Here are leads to a few LEED projects with firing ranges. The first one in particular was built due to safety problems in the old firing range.
