Ideas for student projects

Even if I never had a calendar, at all of the schools I have ever worked for or with, I could tell the passage of the seasons by certain telltale signs - my version of a campus sun dial. If there is a mountain of cardboard piling up around the residence halls, it must be late August or early September when the students are moving in; if there is a mountain of personal belongings piled up near the dumpsters, it must be student move-out in May; if the folks wandering around campus look remarkably either much older or much younger, it must be summer conferences; and if I have students coming to me looking for ideas for student projects, it must be mid-October.
