This post is related to STARS, AASHE's Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System.

Have you been helped in your sustainability work by advice from someone on your campus experienced at navigating the bureaucracy?

Especially those of you in the STARS pilot, who've dealt with the immense complication of getting people in all corners of the campus to help you report out on a myriad of things.

I know of a few SCUP members who have communicated to me that they thought they had been very helpful in that way, since they tend to be senior people with lots of experience at that.

If you've got a story like that, I'd love to hear about it from your perspective. Thanks.

Our firm consults for higher ed in the field of Fixtures, Furniture & Equipment (FF&E), for Capital Improvement Programs. In the community college environment in CA, Shared Governance is a crucial aspect of any project. By enlisting the financial managers of a college to understand the financial AND environmental aspects of the decisions being made with limited resources, and approaching the selection process from a broad perspective of sustainability (Cost of Ownership, Reusability, Flexibility for all applications, etc.), the project teams seem to move in a more pragmatic direction. Many times FF&E is such an afterthought, and the decisions are not truly considered from a holistic perspective. This decision making approach helps to bring together competing agendas without sacrificing the effectiveness of the solutions. Engaging the senior campus leadership in expressing the higher level business issues that others may not fully grasp helps to set the direction and support the efficacy of the process.

Don't know if this is helpful, but I do have many stories about turning the tide in this regard!
