The University of Oregon is evaluating the opportunity to mail pre-freshmen a newsletter introducing campus sustainability programming options. We're considering sending the mailer two months before students arrive because it seems like the best opportunity to get them to make time-sensitive decisions such as use our car-share program and leave their cars at home, coordinate energy efficient appliances with their new roommates, and sign up for freshmen orientation sustainability themed trips. Are there other institutions that have sent a sustainability-themed mailer to the in-coming freshmen class? I'd like to see examples.

There are some examples of pre-orientation sustainability programs that may have mailers as a component. For instance, Wake Forest’s Sustainability in Action program involves recruiting upperclassmen to serve as mentors to a group of incoming students, and organising a set of activities according to the theme of that year’s program. University of Pennsylvania’s green pre-orientation program was discussed in an AASHE Bulletin post, which may be worthwhile to look into. In addition, University of Colorado, Boulder conducted an analysis of how best to reach its incoming students about sustainability and decided upon a web-based approach, explained in depth here.

My best,
Ashwini

I did this one last year - would love to fix it up for this year (due tomorrow!).

Hi Husted,

We're actually working on a sustainability-themed guide for freshmen to be distributed immediately when they move into the dorms. On the last page of our guide, we will include a pledge page that the students can post on their doors, as studies have shown that public commitment will be more effective in behavior change. We love your detailed pledge, and were wondering if we can borrow some of your contents? Really appreciate it!
