Hello all,
We are looking into developing recommendations for study abroad programs in environmental studies for our students, but do not have a lot of experiences to go on. Many students have done programs through School for Field Studies that seem to have been quite good, but we are looking for other options as well. Has anyone found particular programs that they would recommend in terms of academic rigor and quality of experience? Thanks!
At the University of Georgia, we have a series of study-abroad programs designed around concepts related to sustainability. In addition to our Costa Rica campus, http://www.externalaffairs.uga.edu/costa_rica/ we also have Global Programs in Sustainability, focusing on destinations in the South Pacific. http://pacific.uga.edu/
I wish I could figure out a way to get out of the Office of Sustainability and move the work to those locations... LOL
CELL Iceland Program. Accepted, never went. I had another classmate that did go and had a tremendous experience. http://www.cellonline.org/programs/iceland-program/
Hi Casey,
Allow me to introduce Earth Education International. We are an experiential learning organization in Costa Rica providing interdisciplinary course and program offerings related to sustainability, environmental studies and social responsibility. We work in partnership with educational institutions globally, and support and promote sustainable initiatives locally.
We are based in-country, provide an extremely personalized and varied experience to our students, and are very cost-competitive. Our offerings include short courses and a semester abroad program in 'Sustainable Global Stewardship'. Emphasis is on field study, volunteer service-learning work, and cultural immersion. Academic credit is available through Humboldt State University. Offerings can be found here: http://www.earthedintl.org/Offerings.htm#Courses.
Best,
Miguel

Hi Casey,
I direct a non-profit called Living Routes, which partners with the University of Massachusetts - Amherst to offer college-level study abroad programs based in sustainable communities around the world. We're proud to be celebrating our 12th anniversary and run semester, summer, and January-term programs in "ecovillages" in Scotland, India, Israel, Costa Rica, Mexico, Peru, Brazil, Australia, and the U.S. While not utopias, we believe these communities make ideal campuses for learning about sustainability. The programs are both academically rigorous and experientially profound. Please contact me if you have questions or would like us to send you materials.
As a side-note, I've also been very involved with NAFSA and the Forum on Education Abroad, helping them develop sustainability standards for the field of international education. I'm also happy to share more about this work if you're interested.
Take care and I look forward to hearing from you.

- Daniel
