I'm interested in exploring the staffing structure of other Sustainability Offices, and specifically, if any Directors/Managers of Sustainability have direct reports who are responsible for office communications and/or campus engagement. If these positions do exist, I'd love to hear when they were created, how they are managed, how their scope of work has changed over time, etc.

Thanks!

Hi Kayla,

I'm the Sustainability Outreach Specialist at American University, and I report directly to our Director of Sustainability. My position was created in Summer 2011 to split off the engagement/outreach functions of our previously existing Sustainability Coordinator position, who now focuses on more technical projects such as our LEED and carbon inventory programs. The scope of my work is to engage the campus community through outreach, including campus media (web, social media, newsletter, other publications), education (managing our ecorep and green office programs, giving campus sustainability tours and presentations), coordinating events such as Earth Week, and liaising with other campus departments and organizations to help embed sustainability in their operations. The scope of my work hasn't changed much in the past year, although the responsibilities have grown as our programs and initiatives have expanded.

I'd be happy to discuss any of this further with you, and how our outreach position fits into our overall strategy and goals. My e-mail address is jfkaplan@american.edu or I can be reached by phone at (202) 885-6262.

Thanks,
Joshua Kaplan

Hi Kayla,

I am a Sustainability Communications Officer at La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia. Reporting directly to a Pro Vice-Chancellor (Sustainability). Happy to answer any questions you have - our scope of work has changed considerably since July 2010 when the position (and our sustainability office began). Our focus is on internal and external engagement to an audience of about 30, 000 people and we are now undertaking behaviour change programs. There have been numerous challenges so far - more that happy to discuss.

My email address is J.Ayers@latrobe.edu.au

Cheers

Hi Kayla. I work at Portland State University, and my position is Sustainability Leadership and Outreach Coordinator. My position works to form a bridge between Student Affairs and our Sustainability hub, the Institute for Sustainable Solutions (ISS). I coordinate opportunities for students outside the classroom. The position was created in July 2009. Actually, my position sounds quite similar to Josh Kaplan (above).

We also have a Communications Director who reports to the ISS and has strong connections with University Communications. Finally, there is an Outreach Coordinator for staff. She mostly works with departments.

Happy to discuss more. Feel free to contact me at hspaldin@pdx.edu.
