Hi, am wondering if there are any threads already about charging stations for electric cars. Are schools considering charging parkers for the charging? Anyone using solar collectors as an energy source?
thanks
Laurie
We at the University of California, Santa Barbara plan to install 2-4 Level II EV charging stations along with a PV solar array on one of our parking structures. This installation is currently slated go into services the Summer of 2011. I expect that we will charge something for the energy provided (Expected $1-3 per charge on top of our parking rates). We want to trim our campus CO2 emissions and as Charging EVs becomes more popular we will reduce CO2 emissions from commuters and shift some of the CO2 emissions to the campus... The same is true as we add more campus housing...Fewer commuter trips and more CO2 emissions attributed to the campus.

Hi Laurie,
This is a great question! In 2009, AASHE awarded a group of Stanford University students our "Student Research on Campus Sustainability Award" for their research paper, "EVs with PVs: Analysis of Electric Vehicle Integration at Stanford University Using Solar PV Panels". This paper is in our student research database and also available from the hyperlinked title.
If you use the search tool on the AASHE site you will see other examples of campuses with charging stations (for example, Portland Community College, and many other campuses discussing plans for them in their climate action plans).
Cheers,
Niles
