We're trying to implement a carpooling program at Colgate that would include an emergency ride home for employees who need to go home earlier than their normal carpool arrangement due to an emergency (sick child, etc.).

I'd like to find out how often this option is used in campuses that offer it.  My guess is that it is used lightly enough that there is no need to have a policy of verifying the emergency.

Would anyone be willing to share their policies and information about how often the service is used? Thanks.

We at the Univeristy of Califonia, Santa Barbara have had an Emergency Ride Home program in place for nearly 20 years. We limit the number of rides to 6 per year and we do as the nature of the emergency.  The person must pick up the car from fleet services and sign some paperwork promising to bring the car back on the next business day an travel no more than the expected distance between campus and home or pay for additional rental time and miles .

We allow for personal emergency and unscheduled supervisor-approved overtime. Stranded carpooler or vanpooler, Sick employee or sick kid or broken pipe OK and any sort of mechanical difficulty is excluded.

Emergency Ride Home Program
Eligible members of the Transportation Alternatives Program are qualified for the Emergency Ride Home Program if they hold a valid California driver’s license. In the event of unexpected personal or family illness, or unexpected supervisor-approved overtime, a UC vehicle may be made available for a maximum of six times per year for one round-trip between UCSB and home.

Our program offers an Emergency Ride Home option.  Details are at http://www.northwestern.edu/uservices/transportation/commuter/rideshare.html.  There has only been one claim thus far (the program has been in place for a little over a year).
