Does anyone know where to find a study or report comparing the recycling facilities among colleges and universities? I'm writing a proposal for a larger, more practical facility, and I think if I could show what other schools are doing (especially PAC-10/12), I'll have a greater chance of convincing. Which schools have actual buildings, and how much area do you have? Does a building and greater area make for a more effective operation?

Hi David,

I am unaware of a report that directly compares different institutions recycling facilities, but if you haven't viewed it already, you should look into AASHE's recycling resource: http://www.aashe.org/resources/resources-waste-minimization-and-recyclin...

There's a whole host of different institutions in there and direct links to their individual policies and to their facilities. It should help you get a good start.

Thanks,

Tim

Tim,
Thanks for the tip. I looked through a few schools, yet, perhaps not surprisingly, there's little information about size of staff, vehicles, balers and square footage of reycling yards or buildings. I can probably glean some useful information by searching a little deeper. What I'm finding is that recycling departments vary greatly from school to school, and at some websites its a challenge to even find links to recycling departments. Maybe AASHE could generate a survey? It would be helpful to know what we should have in terms of facilities compared to our school size/population.
Thanks again,
Dave

Hey David,
You might find an upcoming webinar from the College & University Recycling Coalition (CURC) really helpful. It is on "Equipment for Effective Recycling Operations" and it is on April 7th. More info on the webinar is here.
Here is the description of the webinar:
Whether you are looking to reduce injuries, save time, or expand collections -- selecting the right equipment for your needs is key. Yet, how do schools do this on a tight or non-existent budget?

Presenters for this webinar acknowledge that each school has a different set of circumstances -- size, setting, funding, staff, markets. They also recognize, astutely, that each school is in a different stage of development or growth. Some are just starting out, others are well established and equally equipped. Others are somewhere in between.

Many schools begin with hand-me-down everything. Some have moved beyond that. By using real schools and real examples, our speakers will address the questions that program coordinators ask when trying to move their programs to the next level.

Thank you Niles! Almost exactly what I didn't know I was looking for.
