New Resource of Student Research on Campus Sustainability

AASHE is proud to announce a new resource! This database contains papers submitted as part of AASHE's award for student research on campus sustainability.


STARS 1.0 Early Release has launched!

Since the Higher Education Associations Sustainability Consortium (HEASC) first called for a campus sustainability rating system in 2006, AASHE has been creating STARS, the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment, & Rating System, for colleges and universities. After three years of collaboration with numerous higher education professionals, sustainability experts, and professional organizations, AASHE has launched the STARS 1.0 Early Release at the Greening of the Campus VIII: Embracing Change.


Martha J. Kanter, U.S. Undersecretary of Education, Spoke at Climate Leadership Summit

Stephen Muzzy, Program Manager at Second Nature highlights sessions and resources from the 2009 ACUPCC Climate Leadership Summit, which took place in Chicago in mid August, 2009. In this post, he describes the presentation of Dr. Martha J. Kanter, U.S. Undersecretary of Education.

Dr. Martha J. Kanter the U.S. Undersecretary of Education and former Chancellor of Foothill-De Anza Community College District delivered the opening keynote at the 2009 ACUPCC Climate Leadership Summit. Dr. Kanter made clear that the Obama administration recognizes the importance and the challenge of addressing climate disruption and that formal education is a key strategy to halt it. With the administrations support, the Department of Education is focused on creating a common agenda for how we live and how we educate in order to provide health and economic prosperity for all. To achieve this, Dr. Kanter believes that sharing information and collaborating across sectors are the most effective means to scale up efforts towards a green and clean economy. Dr. Kanter shared the following key developments in federal policy, stimulus funding, and information on creating healthy, high performance schools:
 


Special Issue of The International Journal of Sustainability in Higher Education Focuses on Climate Action Planning at North American Colleges and Universities

I wanted to pass on some exciting news that readers of Campus Sustainability Perspectives will hopefully find helpful. The most recent issue of The International Journal of Sustainability in Higher Education (IJSHE)  was prepared in cooperation with AASHE and with Judy Walton (Membership and Outreach Director) serving as the guest editor.This special edition focuses on climate action planning on campuses in the US and Canada.

IJHSE is offering limited free online access to this edition from August 24th to September 14th 2009. To gain access, please use these log-in details - username: ijshe300 with password: emerald

The articles included in this edition illustrate geographic and institutional diversity as well as variety in type of project – from an academic course to a university-wide initiative to a nation-wide survey of student climate initiatives.


APA Report on the Interface Between Psychology and Global Climate Change

The American Psychological Association's (APA) task force studying the interface between psychology and global climate change recently released a report of their findings.  The report outlines the important role that psychology has in understanding, limiting, and coping with climate change.


MIT Researchers discover potent new Greenhouse Gas

Chances are, if you do not regularly spray fumigants to control insects in grain storage faculties or to kill mice and weevils in industrial agriculture settings, you've probably never heard of Methyl bromide or Sulfuryl fluoride. However, scientists at MIT are bringing new recognition to the chemicals now that research has demonstrated that sulfuryl fluride is a very potent greenhouse gas.

AASHE's Sustainability Across the Curriculum Leadership Workshop

Last week, I got to participate in AASHE's Sustainability Across the Curriculum Leadership Workshop held at San Diego State University. AASHE hosts this energizing two-day workshop for faculty and staff in higher ed. twice a year with the help and talents of Peggy Barlett from Emory University and Geoff Chase from San Diego State University. I must say that the good rumors are true: it was awesome.


AASHE Launches New Award for Student Research on Campus Sustainability

We know that students are producing amazing research on campus sustainability on a regular basis. Too often however, use of this research is limited to the institution where the author is based and the rest of the campus sustainability community doesn't benefit.
