Welcome to the AASHE Interview & Podcast Series! This series features interviews with sustainability professionals across North America working to advance sustainability on campuses and beyond. AASHE Interview Series: Angela Halfacre, Director of the David E. Shi Center for Sustainability and Professor of Political Science, Furman University

This week’s interview is with Angela Halfacre, Director of the David E. Shi Center for Sustainability and Professor of Political Science at Furman University. At Furman, Dr. Halfacre teaches environmental policy and sustainability courses and directs the Shi Center for Sustainability, especially its curricular programs and community based research efforts. In her interview, Dr. Halfacre discusses the many ways she is involved in advancing sustainability on Furman’s campus and surrounding community, advice she has for others in similar positions, and the area she views as having the largest potential for growth in the field.

AASHE Interview Series: Andrew Crane, George R. Gardiner Professor of Business Ethics, Schulich School of Business, York University

This week’s interview is with Andrew Crane, the George R. Gardiner Professor of Business Ethics in the Schulich School of Business at York University (ON). The Aspen Institute recently released their Beyond Grey Pinstripes ranking of business graduate schools that incorporate sound environmental and social stewardship into their curricula and the Schulich School of Business received first place. This prestigious ranking is attributed to a number of factors, one being the research from the many devoted professors at Schulich. Dr. Crane's research focuses on the evolving role of corporations and the role of businesses in the globalizing world--specifically their environmental and social responsibilities. In his interview, Dr. Crane discusses the ways he is involved in promoting the values of sustainability and social responsibility into the next generation of business leaders.

AASHE Interview Series: David Steinour, Interim Chief Information Officer, The George Washington University

The topic of sustainability and of "greening" IT departments continues to become a more popular area of focus especially on college and university campuses. A recent AASHE Bulletin article highlighted the work The George Washington University (GWU) is doing to green it's IT infrastructure.


AASHE Interview Series: Shane Tedder, Sustainability Coordinator, University of Kentucky

This week's interview is with Shane Tedder, the Sustainability Coordinator in the Office of Residence Life at the University of Kentucky. Three years into his current position, Shane has been actively working to advance sustainability on the University’s campus for over six. He is responsible for transforming a graduate assistantship in which he helped to oversee recycling in the residence halls into a more comprehensive sustainability program emphasizing education, and he deserves much of the credit for connecting the many disparate sustainability initiatives on UK’s campus and taking them to the next level.

A longtime friend and mentor, Shane continues to work tirelessly to improving existing programs and working to help create new programs that move the University in a sustainable direction. Continue reading to learn more about the programs Shane is currently working on, his thoughts on the necessity of decentralization in the sustainability movement, and what he is most looking forward to in 2009.

AASHE Interview Series: Bharat Patel, Director of Sustainability, Los Angeles Community College District

This week’s interview is with Bharat Patel, the Director of Sustainability for Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD). LACCD is one of the largest community college district in the United States with more than 130,000 students at nine campuses, spread throughout 36 cities in the Los Angeles area.
With over 30 years experience in energy and sustainable development, along with degrees in engineering and environmental building engineering, Bharat brings his knowledge to advancing sustainability at LACCD in many different areas.
