AASHE Bulletin: Global Edition - Key Stories

AASHE recently published its second issue of its AASHE Bulletin: Global Edition, and I wanted to take a moment to note a few that were particularly interesting to me.

First, a story from an Australian AASHE member -

AASHE's Campus Sustainability Discussion Forums are here!

The AASHE Campus Sustainability Discussion Forums are here!

If you have an interest in joining in on interactive campus sustainability discussions, you will want to visit and participate in the forums. The forums provide a central place where those interested in campus sustainability can ask and answer questions, share knowledge and expertise, and contribute to the growing body of knowledge on campus sustainability.

New Resource on Campus Fleets with Hybrid Vehicles

AASHE has a new members-only resource featuring a list of campuses with hybrid vehicles in their fleets. This resource accompanies two other resources on campuses with electric and biodiesel vehicles in their fleets. Many campuses are making a transition to more efficient fleet vehicles in an effort to save money on fuel costs and lessen their impact on the environment.

Open Thread on College Sustainability Report Card

The Sustainable Endowments Institute released its  College Sustainability Report Card today. There often seems to be a desire within the campus sustainability community to discuss the Report Card so please use this space to share your thoughts. How is your campus reacting to the Report Card? Are you able to use the Report Card to advance sustainability on your campus? What do you like about it and what do you dislike about it? Are there things that you'd like to see changed?

STARS 1.0 Early Release has launched!

Since the Higher Education Associations Sustainability Consortium (HEASC) first called for a campus sustainability rating system in 2006, AASHE has been creating STARS, the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment, & Rating System, for colleges and universities. After three years of collaboration with numerous higher education professionals, sustainability experts, and professional organizations, AASHE has launched the STARS 1.0 Early Release at the Greening of the Campus VIII: Embracing Change.

Sustainable Landscaping on Campus

in

The AASHE Resource Center now has resources in every major category with the release of a new list of campus sustainable landscaping policies, practices and plans. Perhaps given less attention then other areas of campus sustainability, campus grounds do play an important role - often designed to be beautiful and welcoming, increasingly, they are also being designed with an eye to water efficiency and without the use of pesticides.

Although we have been fortunate to have ample rain here in Kentucky this Spring, many states are facing droughts and it is a great time to look at some of the many benefits of xeriscape and water efficient landscaping. Campuses like Florida State University and the University of Florida have commitments to xeriscaping (a landscaping philosophy that emphasizes using native and drought-resistant plants which do not require supplemental irrigation).  Broward Community College also emphasizes the use of native planting, while the University of Delaware utilizes a bioswale at one of their parking lots.

New Recognition Program for Campus Trees

This post was written by Addie Davis, an intern for AASHE's STARS Program

Tree Campus USA, the Arbor Day Foundation's latest addition to a lineup of tree management certification programs including Tree City USA and Tree Line USA, is a great resource for colleges and universities interested in creating a healthy campus tree culture.

Institutions that apply for the certification are expected to exhibit superior campus tree management practices, have a strong commitment to helping local communities foster healthy urban forests, and have an exemplary commitment to and record of engaging their student populations in service learning projects focused on campus, community and forestry efforts.

Energy Conservation & Green Landscaping at McGill University

AASHE is working on building a catalog of high quality, campus sustainability-related photos that it can provide to reporters and AASHE members for use in publications, websites and other promotional materials. Ultimately, we want to open the catalog so that AASHE members can get exposure for their efforts by uploading their own photos.
