Campus Sustainability Day (Oct 24)
People can celebrate UF’s push to go green on the Reitz Union North Lawn on Oct. 24 with a carnival-themed Campus Sustainability Day.
The Office of Sustainability is sponsoring the event, which will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., along with about 10 student organizations to raise awareness about sustainability on campus. Each organization will have a booth with information on the group and on going green. Every organization’s booth will feature carnival-style games. To continue with the trend of sustainability, the carnival games will be made out of re-purposed materials due to the organizations’ small budgets.

One Less Car Initiative (Oct 31)
The One Less Car initiative asks the Gator Nation – students, staff and faculty – to pledge to reduce their single-occupancy car travel and commute by an alternative mode of transportation as often as possible and especially on One Less Car Day. Using alternative transportation saves money and reduces your impact on the planet, whether it be walking, biking, taking a bus, or carpooling. By choosing to walk, bike, bus or carpool, we can reduce the number of cars on the road, and thus reduce air and noise pollution, time lost in traffic, and save money on gas. Plus, some modes are great exercise!

The program encourages Gators to be a part of the Sustainable UF movement by reducing their single-occupancy car trips and pledging to use alternative transportation on October 31. UF has a goal of being carbon neutral by 2025, with transportation-related emissions accounting for roughly 10 percent of the university’s carbon footprint. Since 2008, nearly 3,500 people have participated in the One Less Car program, avoiding approximately 100,000 trips and keeping close to 800 tons of carbon dioxide emissions from entering the atmosphere.

On One Less Car Day, the participants will celebrate with activities and snacks on the Reitz Student Union North Lawn. One Less Car Day registrants will be entered for a chance to win a bicycle, helmet, light kit and lock, and there will be other games, activities and giveaways.
