.
Students will be “canvassing” the college on Wednesday, Campus Sustainability Day 2012, to generate support for GMO Labeling. They were approached by Food & Water Watch, then invited a representative to present to them about the program, and felt it was something they wanted to help with. They have been reading about it and learning more through their contact at the F&WW Chicago. This effort is not only about sustainability or green, but also very much supports our democracy commitment.
About Food & Water Watch "Let Me Decide" Campaign
Food & Water Watch "Let Me Decide" campaign to label genetically engineered (GE) food in Illinois has been gaining momentum. Genetically engineered foods are untested, unlabeled and potentially unsafe. We have to act now to pass a bill requiring GE ingredients to be labeled in Illinois. No long-term studies show that genetically engineered foods are safe for human consumption, but the Food and Drug Administration still doesn’t require such foods to be labeled. We don't know what the consequences will be for human health and the environment. Food & Water Watch is working to label genetically engineered food state-wide so that consumers can decide if they want to eat these ingredients. Just as fat, sugar, and sodium are already labeled, consumers should know if their food has been genetically engineered. Agribusinesses like Monsanto have pledged to spend more than $25 million to oppose labeling, but with enough public support we know we can win.
