.
The Office of Sustainability (OoS), in partnership with the Associated Students of New Mexico State University (ASNMSU), is hosting a campus forum to discuss sustainability at NMSU. We will show a short video, have a speaker present, and then break everyone into groups to discuss issues on our campus, strategies to these issues, challenges to those strategies, and solutions to the challenges.
The purpose of the event is to engage the campus community in sustainability, connect groups and allies on campus, highlight NMSU’s strategies for sustainability, share ideas and visions, and brainstorm solutions to the challenges we face.
The OoS also wants to organize a “Sign Flood” where we make a large assortment of educational signs from recycled cardboard and hang them ALL OVER campus to help spread awareness. These signs will contain facts about sustainability, local figures of waste generated, water consumed, etc. all in an attempt to get people thinking about environmental issues.
During the day the OoS will be tabling with various green student organizations, who will each focus on particular topics:
- The Organization of Aggie Students Inspiring Sustainability (OASIS) will host a sustainability film and/or organic agriculture demonstration
- The Environmental Science Student Organization (ESSO) will host a composting workshop and demonstration
- Hort (Horticulture) Forum will host a plant sale
- Science Alliance/SEEDS will host an educational booth as well
The OoS will also host a screening of the Campus Sustainability Day National Keynote Broadcast at 2:00pm-3:30pm, which will be open to students, faculty, staff, and the community.
The Southern New Mexico Bicycle Educators organization will provide bicycle safety information on campus as well.
The campus forum event will be held in our student union building at 6:00pm on the evening of October 24th and is expected to go until about 9:00pm. The event space can host 56 people. The Provost has been asked to introduce the event and the Manager of Environmental Policy and Sustainability will also speak. Roundtable discussions will follow.
