Making your Campus a Bee Campus USA Affiliate

While pollinators are imperative for the reproduction of 90% of the world’s wild plant species and three-quarters of crops, announcements of their national and global staggering declines seem relentless. However, there are ways college campuses can help! They can serve not only as models for pollinator-friendly landscaping practices, but also education and outreach centers for changing our landscaping paradigms. This webinar, taking place during National Pollinator Week, will explain the application process for becoming a Bee Campus USA affiliate and the commitments entailed. Examples of how current affiliates are fulfilling their commitments will be featured.

Making your Campus a Bee Campus USA Affiliate

	Phyllis Stiles, Executive Director, Bee City USA The North American Pollinator Protection Campaign named Phyllis Stiles the U.S. Pollinator Advocate for 2015. As the Founder and Director of Bee City USA & Bee Campus USA, Stiles is learning all she can about how to support the hard-working pollinators that sustain our planet. Stiles has served universities and non-profits in fields ranging from natural resource and farmland protection to civic leadership development in communities from the Blue Ridge Mountains to West Africa to the Mississippi Delta.
	Emily O’Hara; Save the Bees Campaign Coordinator, UConnPIRG Secretary, ConnPIRG; University of Connecticut, Storrs Emily O’Hara is a sophomore pursuing a major in Political Science with a minor in English. She is the ConnPIRG State Board Secretary, as well as the Secretary for the UConn chapter. Emily is also the coordinator of the UConnPIRG “Save the Bees” Campaign. In this role, Emily facilitates the implementation of the Bee Campus USA commitment by organizing grassroots initiatives around pollinators, such as creating a local alliance of bee-friendly restaurants. As the coordinator, she also helped UConn to become designated as a Bee Campus USA in the spring of 2017.
	Jackie Hamstead, Environmental Specialist, UNC Asheville Jackie Hamstead started working at UNC Asheville in May 2015. Her role of Environmental Specialist contains many parts: 1/3 waste reduction, 1/3 stormwater management, and 1/3 pollinator advocate. This is a perfect fit, especially considering her B.A. in Sustainable Development and M.S. in Biology. UNC Asheville has been a certified Bee Campus since early 2016 and Jackie is a graduate of Bee City USA’s Certified Pollinator Advocate course.
	Elaine Cole, Sustainability Coordinator, Portland Community College-Rock Creek Elaine Cole, PhD, is the Sustainability Coordinator at Portland Community College’s Rock Creek Campus and is responsible for the overall coordination of sustainability practices and programs. She was instrumental in getting the campus apiary started in 2014 and serves as the college-wide chair of the Bee Campus USA committee to increase pollinator habitat and education. Beyond supporting these charismatic microfauna, Dr. Cole has a deep commitment to population education, which is demonstrated in her 2017 TEDX talk “Creating Eco-Friendly Families“.
