AASHE Senior Council Description

Criteria for Membership

Senior Council members:

  • Are prominent leaders in sustainability within higher education or other sectors.
  • Speak frequently to large audiences and/or write regularly on sustainability topics.
  • Are firmly committed to achieving a just and sustainable society and to the goals and mission of AASHE.
  • Possess a firm commitment to improving the learning experience of college and university students and to seeing sustainability modeled on campuses and in their surrounding communities.

Roles & Responsibilities of Senior Council Members

Senior Council members support the organization’s growth and development in the following ways:

  • Commit to promoting AASHE in their presentations and writings.
  • Provide advice on strategic direction and programs to the Board of Directors and staff.
  • Promote AASHE to colleagues and identify opportunities for collaboration with other organizations and individuals.
  • Connect the organization with potential funders and leaders who can help advance its mission.
  • Promote linkages between sustainability in higher education and in businesses, nonprofits, and government.

There are no formal meetings of the Senior Council: Members report to the Executive Director once a year on their activities related to AASHE.
Senior Council members are invited to attend the annual business meeting and hosted receptions at conferences.

Structure of Senior Council

The Senior Council consists of 10-20 higher education, business and other leaders selected by AASHE staff and board members and appointed by the Board of Directors.
Appointments are normally made once a year at the annual meeting.
The term of service is three years, renewable. Terms are staggered to avoid a complete turnover every three years
Membership in AASHE by a Senior Council member’s institution or business is required (with exceptions made in some circumstances).
Changes to the Senior Council structure, criteria or responsibilities must be approved by the Board of Directors.
